THE MONUMENTS

Thessaloniki was founded in 315 b.c by the King Cassander of Macedonia, in a very significant location which lies on the crossroads of road an sea axes of the Balkans. It gained the reputation of an important economic and cultural center of the area, during the Roman Times, (capital city of Macedonia province since 148-147 b.c), as well as during the Byzantine Times (seat of the province of the eastern Illiricum, second most important city of the Empire after Constantinople). During the balkan wars (1912) the city regains its hellenic sovereignly, and since then, follows the historic route of modern Greece. The early Christian and Byzantine monuments of the city have been included in the UNESCO's catalogue of World Heritage Monuments.
